XGIII: Extreme G Racing, AKA Extreme-G 3, is a racing game that was developed by Acclaim Studios (Cheltenham UK) and was published in 2001 for PlayStation 2 and GameCube. The sequel to this game is known as XGRA: Extreme G Racing Association.

It’s a bit of a mixture between F-Zero and Wipeout but then with a lot better and tight controls than Wipeout. It’s 23rd Century Racing on Tron like motorbikes.

In the over two decades that I own this game I’ve never read the manual, nor did I read through the in-game explanation of the sports. As a result I never figured out how to use the weapons and if you can use the weapons. The only obvious extra button is the circle button for boost and the X button for accelleration and the analog left stick for steering. The trigger buttons nudge the bike left and right but the shoulder buttons and all the other buttons don’t seem to be doing anything. Possibly there is a very intricate and elaborate weapon’s system that I am absolutely oblivious to. I reckon a weapon’s control scheme that is that hard to trigger probably isn’t my cuppa – Oh the only thing I didn’t try are L3 and R3… could it be that those fire weapons?

It also has a multiplayer option that I personally never checked out. Still I quite like the game. But I only ever do what I just showed you here in this video. 😱😁

The game was received rather well, it got a metacritic score of 81/100 (the Gamecube variant scored 83/100), Edge 6/10, Gamespot 8.5/10, IGN 8.4/10

‼️The SD RGB video has been upscaled to 4K so that YouTube kicks the proper encoder, otherwise this would be an even more pixellated mess. YouTube isn’t kind to SD quality retro gaming video these days. Even 1080p video gets messy easily….
