The POWKIDDY X15 Android 7.x handheld came out a couple of years ago and it came without the Google Playstore and the questionable HappyChick emulation / game suite that basically mostly works in China.
I deleted HappyChick almost immediately and installed F-Droid as an alternative download source to install games and emulators from. As well as using the releases directly from GitHub.
The analog stick is okay, the shoulder buttons clicky and not very effective. The action buttons are okay but the d-pad (the same as the action buttons ala Switch) is horrible. Yet surprisingly it is possible to perform Streetfighter special moves when you put your thumb in the middle of those buttons.
It’s not a powerful device and at first glance it looks like a PSP. I figured it’d be perfect for PSP with PPSSPP which to a large extend it actually is, but not all games will run well. The device is a little anemic for systems above the 16bit era.
John’s emulators, Retroarch an older version of Lemuroid work well on the decide though. It has 2 full USB ports on top to hook up two wired controllers (HID) as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack and a mini HDMI connector. Using a couple of Xbox 360/One game pads hooking it up to the TV it actually is quite nice for two “on the couch” multiplayer gaming.
Don’t expect to run the latest emulators but it still is worth it in 2023. I use it for PSP mostly as it is more comfortable than my PSVita.
