[AMSTRAD CPC] Cabal – Longplay & Review

Review and longplay / walkthrough for “Cabal” on the Amstrad CPC!

Conversion of an unlikely hit in the arcade’s from the small and relatively unknown “TAD Corporation”, the exciting and relatively innovative gameplay at the time pulled in the punters! A year later Ocean had snapped up the rights to convert it, and programmer Jim Bagley was tasked with doing the Spectrum and Amstrad versions… although it appears Ocean left him little time left for the Amstrad port! Which is sadly a Spectrum port, which here might have been a good thing given how excellent the Speccy version was – unfortunately the CPC suffered from slower pace with bad slow down, and even less colours making it a rather uninviting game to return to – especially with the frustrating difficulty level. And jeez… this was a real slog getting this longplay done I can tell you!

I look at the arcade original first as comparison, at the end is the title screen music in full and I also revisit the final boss battle due to a bug meaning we don’t see the ending screen! However I found a poke to correct this!

How to get the ending –
Use WinApe emulator’s Debugger window and search (Ctrl + F) for Hex Data – “C3 B0 0B 3E 00 32 73 FE 3A”. When you find it change the “00” to “01” then resume the game!
