ONLIVE SONY/DRM-MAYEM – VLOG
Lactobacillus Prime
THE ONLIVE STREAMING GAMING SERVICE
IS SOLD TO SONY WHICH DECIDES TO TERMINATE
OPERATION ON APRIL 30th, 2015
Apart from streaming you could also buy
games on the service, which quite a few
people have done.
But people who have bought games on this
service are toast, as now it turns out they
will not have access to their games
anymore as Sony will just terminate the
service April 30th.
Is Sony shooting themselves in the foot?
Are they setting a precedent they may not
want to set?
Perhaps the public will be outraged by this,
realizing that companies have been selling
them games that can be taken away from
them at any time.
Perhaps the public who only paid for the
subscription just shrugs their shoulders
and thinks – okay then, what’s next? It was
fun while it lasted.
Or perhaps they just don’t care and keep on
forking out the money to temporarily play
the games at too a high price.
It may very well be that most people will
just go with this shrugging their shoulders
not realizing they’re getting royally
screwed.
To a person from my generation saving up
and paying for something you bought
and being able to do with it as you please.
Even being able to resell it if needed,
makes sense.
I perceive a distinct difference between
buying and renting something.
Renting something restricts usage but you
still get to enjoy it for a limited amount of
time.
Now all these digitally distributed games –
especially on the new consoles – do cost
even more than ever. Up front you are told
that you actually buy the games/movies,
But the ULA actually tells a different story!
YOU DON’T OWN ANYTHING!
And things can be taken away at any time!
Like what is happening to people who
actually bought games on Onlive.
To me it is a mess.!
Other than subscribing to a streaming
service at the fraction of the cost (Netflex),
buying DRM Free games/movies or
physical media without the
(DRM install patch download dial-home
crap) I don’t see myself buying a lot of
games/movies for (the new) systems
if they are kept at the current ridiculous
premium prices.
If games / movies were cheap and/or tied
to the machine without the need to check
and dial home I may still get some.
But I will treat it as a temporary experience
in the hear and now and not as owning
anything for keeps.
Maybe I am an old generation X geezer,
but I am very curious after what others
including the young ones have to say about
this.
I reckon knowing the value of money and
having worked and having paid the bills
yourself may alter your view. But then again
it may not make any difference…
