5 Great Retro Racing Games! Retro Recommendations #4

5 Great Retro Racing Games.

I’ve been playing a lot of Burnout Paradise recently on the PS4 and it got me thinking about some of my other favourite racing games.

There’s a few things I look for in a racing game, great controls, fast gameplay and interesting courses. I’ve picked 5 of my favourites on a variety of retro consoles to show you today.

5.
Outrun 2006 Coast 2 Coast.
This game just screams SEGA. With its bright blue skies, amazing soundtrack and fun, arcade gameplay, Outrun 2006 is one of the best racing games if you want a quick blast of gameplay or to relive those days in the arcade. Included in this game is a complete arcade conversion of Outrun SP. As well as the all new Coast 2 Coast mode which included loads of single player challenges. It’s one of those games that you can come back to time and time again. I just wish the Dreamcast would have lasted longer as this would have suited it perfectly.

4.
Ridge Racer Type 4
Some games you can just loose yourself in, really get into the zone, this is one of those titles. With its super smooth frame-rate and great controls its easy to finish a whole race without even realising! This version of Ridge Racer is an incredible package compared to the original, it’s almost crazy how much content there is, with over 300 cars and 8 tracks. Namco also included the whole of the original Ridge Racer in the box too, along with a souped up 60FPS version, making this game one of the best racing games you can get on the original playstation!

3.
Need For Speed Underground 2
By far my favourite game in the Need For Speed series, and one I always wish they would re-visit. This was my first experience with an open world driving game. I loved just exploring the city and finding my own paths to speed down. The variety in the game is also top notch, with many different race types such as circuit races, drag races, drift challenges and more. The controls could be a bit tighter but overall it still feels great to play. The customisation options also kept me coming back for more. I was always disappointed in the later NFS games, they never seemed to capture the same atmosphere as Underground 2. That’s why this will always be one of my favourite racing games.

2.
Beetle Racing Adventure
Don’t let the name, or the fact that it only features one car put you off. This is an amazing racing game for the N64 with some long winding courses jam packed with shortcuts and secrets. one of my favourite things about this game is not the racing, but finding the best way through the course, theres some huge shortcuts which almost take you onto a completely new track for a while. It kind of reminds me of Sanfransisco Rush 2049. The graphics are great and the framerate is solid. An all round great game. I only picked it up recently but it’s already one of my favourites on the system!

1.
Burnout Legends.
Bringing it back to Burnout, I was going to feature Burnout 3, which is my favourite of the series, but I couldn’t find the disc. So instead this is the PSP game, Burnout Legends. An amazing portable racing game which is like a “Best of” for the entire burnout series up to that point. It features all the modes oyu’d expect, and most of the tracks too. It’s very impressive to see this running on the PSP, I can only imagine how impressive it was back in 2005! I’ve been really enjoying playing this hand-held entry of the Burnout series. Just a word of warning, avoid the DS version at all costs!
