My Ultimate64 Experience IV – Proper 100% functioning HDMI Recording with the Elgato

#Ultimate64 #Commodore64 #FPGA

The Ultimate 64, an FPGA Commodore 64 re-implementation created by Gideon Zweijtzer. Which results in a brand new C64 that doesn’t need to use any of the old parts… well a keyboard still is needed but I’ve heard about new replacement mechanical keyboards being built for the C64. And if you use SID chips you can severely augment the audio experience. I put in two from two deceased C64s that had severe damage to the motherboard that rendered them un-salvageable.

Recording VIDEO through HDMI proved to be not possible with the Avermedia Live Gamer Portable I was using. As the Ultimate64 outputs a FPS that seems to seize up the Avermedia capture card. Capturing the Ultimate64 through Composite video also proved to be a hassle – not because of the Ultimate64 as that outputs a regular CVBS composite signal and is also capable of outputting RGB through a modified cable specifically for the Ultimate64. But it proved difficult because Windows10 Home with the latest Fall Update (2018) rendered all of my old school video capture devices capable of capturing RGB/S-VIDEO or Composite useless.

But I did find a solution. The Elgato HD60 S takes the Ultimate64’s HDMI signal without any hiccups and I was able to fire up OBS and record the footage off the card with minimal confuration. So easy capture of HDMI audio & video is capable with a main stream well available capture card.

I might actually do a follow up on how to use the Elgato HD60 S for capturing those old school signals: RGB, Composite, Component, VGA, Analog audi! As that too is possible with an extra bit of kit!

Kudos go to Gideon for providing the community with this wonderful piece of kit, also the 1541 Ultimate solid state storage solutions he builds and provides a ton of ongoing support for.
