RPCS3 is a free and open-source PlayStation 3 emulator and debugger written in C++ for Windows, Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD. The project aims to accurately emulate the PlayStation 3, leveraging reverse engineering and community collaboration. It allows users to play their legally purchased PlayStation 3 games on their PC or handheld devices. The emulator is known for its impressive performance, with some games even running at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second.
The development of RPCS3 is ongoing, with regular updates and improvements from its contributors. The project also encourages contributions from developers and offers a Patreon for those who wish to support its development financially.
Super Stardust HD is a downloadable multidirectional shooter game developed by Housemarque and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation. Released in June 2007 it is much older than the visuals might let you believe. Basically it’s like Asteroids and Robotron’s lovechild. The player commands a spaceship around a ‘planet’ with the left stick and you can shoot it’s weapons independently of the direction in which the ship flies. Alternating between different weapons is necessary in order to remain quick and efficient at destroying opponents, debris and asteroids/space junk. When it launched it ncluded both single-player and cooperative multiplayer modes.
I believe Super Stardust HD is the first PS3 game that supported trophies which adds a bit of a competitive edge onto the game – but is heavily dependant on ‘servers’. Versions of this game exist for PSP and PSVita. And for PS4 there’s a port for the PSVR. A prime example of twin stick shooterhood.
