Running 25 year old Retro Windows Games On Modern Windows 11 ARM On The M1 MacMini With Parallels

#Halo #3DMark #Parallels

Microsoft Windows is quite a backwards compatible OS. With the move towards 64 bit they dropped 16-bit Windows applications but older 32-bit software can still run on modern versions of Windows provided the API they use has a backwards compatible modern counterpart.

What was utterly surprising is the fact that Windows 11 ARM on the M1 MacMini actually is capable of running
– 3DMark 2000 (almost quarter of a century old)
– 3DMark 2001
– Halo Combat Evolved

Well also on this Mac the magic is done by Parellels, which is an awesome bit of Virtualization software that has a specific gaming mode built in as well.

Hardware:
M1 MacMini MacOS Sonoma 14.3.1 (23D60)
8Gb RAM
OBS
Parallels 19
Davinci Resolve

‼️The USB Microphone I used had issues polling and made a farting noise.

Enjoy & thanks for watching,
