In 2020, a game called GG Aleste 3 was made for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. It’s part of a collection and was also included in a special version of a tiny Game Gear console.
The game is about a pilot named Luna Waizen who has to stop cyber terrorists that took over Earth’s satellites. It’s a shooting game where you control Luna and shoot down lots of enemies while dodging their attacks. People who made this game had experience from older shooting games, and overall, critics liked it.

Gameplay:
GG Aleste 3 is a vertical shoot’m up game where you control a spaceship called the “Are Savior.” The story is about Luna Waizen, a pilot who has to stop cyber terrorists that took over Earth’s satellites. The game has seven stages that get harder as you go. You shoot enemies and avoid obstacles to reach and defeat a boss in each stage.
You can power up your main weapon by collecting “Power Chips.” There are also six special weapons you can pick up and make stronger if you already have the same one. Instead of bombs, there’s a shield power-up that activates after collecting twenty Power Chips. It lets you take one hit without losing a life. If you get hit, you lose a life, and your firepower decreases. If you run out of lives, the game is over, but you have limited chances to continue playing.

Development:
M2, a company known for making high-quality versions of old video games, developed GG Aleste 3 for the Game Gear. The team included people who worked on shoot ’em up games in the 1990s. The director, Manabu Namiki, also worked on games like Battle Garegga and DoDonPachi DaiOuJou. M2’s CEO, Naoki Horii, produced the game. They announced GG Aleste 3 at the 2020 Tokyo Game Show as part of the Aleste Collection, released in Japan on December 24 for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4.

To make it feel like a real Game Gear game, Sega gave it an official production code, and they even made physical copies with packaging like old Game Gear games. It was also included in a tiny Game Gear Micro as part of a special edition for the Aleste Collection. In Japan, an album with the game’s music and other games from the Aleste Collection was released on April 21, 2022.

Reviews / Reception:
GG Aleste 3, part of the Aleste Collection, got good reviews from critics. Kerry Brunskill from Nintendo Life said it’s one of the best Game Gear games that really pushes the console’s limits and is a great addition to the collection. Kurt Kalata from Hardcore Gaming 101 called it an excellent 8-bit shooter with cool visual effects and impressive boss fights. However, he questioned why M2 chose the Game Gear, pointing out its small screen and noisy soundtrack.

Ryan Lambie, reviewing the Nintendo Switch version for Wireframe, liked how it felt like a cinematic experience compared to modern shooters. He called it a satisfying throwback to old shooters by Compile, praising its balance, design, and fast pace. But he was disappointed that the collection was only available in Japan. Thomas Nickel from Eurogamer liked the big bosses, pixel art, and the game’s balanced difficulty. He said it’s a great trip down memory lane for fans of old-school shooters. Pete Davison from Rice Digital praised the game’s subweapons, bosses, difficulty, and soundtrack, saying it holds up well against the best games on 16-bit consoles.
