Office Mini PC (Ryzen5 2500U, Vega 8) Turned Console Gaming Rig With SteamDeck OS (HoloISO 3.xx)

As Love My SteamDeck I Decided To Try SteamOS (HoloISO) My Ryzen5 2500U Vega8 Mini PC – I Was Quite Surprised!

So after I got my Steamdeck and I used it on the telly with a dock I wondered how my Ryzen5 2500U mini PC would work with SteamOS. When I got it a couple of years ago I even made a video on how close it possibly might be to the then upcoming SteamDeck.

Hardware: T-bao Mini PC
Ryzen5 2500U (4 cores, 8 threads at 2-3.6Ghz) – gen AMD Ryzen 1
Vega 8 Mobile
16Gb DDR4 RAM (2x 8Gb, 2 slots dual channel)
1Tb SATA SSD, 512Gb nvme harddrive
Bios: No possibilities to adjust memory timings nor TDP of CPU
Price: it being 1st gen Ryzen (mobile 2000 series) it can be gotten quite cheap
build quality rather nice. 1x 2.5″ s-ata SSD and 1x m2 NVME

It is all AMD as is the SteamDeck and although it is far less powerful it actually turned out to be quite compatible!

I have tried various other OSes on the little system:
– Windows 10 – great little office machine, some light gaming; but the linux OSes run the same games faster❗ Even Windows Games ❗❗😎
– pop!OS – this machine ran pop!OS better than Windows
– Batocera – excellent streamlined Linux for (retro)gaming
– SteamDeck OS, now could this be the Perfect Storm?

So I installed HoloIso on the MiniPC and it worked like a charm. HoloIso is based off a recovery image of the SteamDeck’s OS and it’s an ArchLinux distro that is as close to SteamOS as can be on something other than the SteamDeck. Mind you it’s experimental and not to be thought of as your main computer or main gaming rig…. or could it ❓

In this video I just captured footage off the HDMI at 720p30 with an external capture card nothing fancy. Basically this is a test for possibly a more in depth video on the topic.

SteamOS let’s my little Ryzen5 2500U PC run things faster and better than other OSes. It uses a separate Window manager/screen manager for outputting the game image on and uses a regular Window manager for the
SteamDeck GUI. It seems to do it all quite well.

Captured on stand alone USB capture card 720p30, 1080p30, edited with Davinci Resolve, transcoded to H.265 4K with Handbrake so it would invoke vp9 codec on YouTube as uploading the 1080p H.264 file would result in a nightmarish avc1 blocky YouTube video mess. YouTube used to make all videos vp9 eventually as avc1 really is not suited for ‘retrogaming’ videos. But it reserves that automatic process for ‘larger’ channels only. So 4K H.265 for this video is overkill but it’s a good thing that it the higher quality encoding (at least for retro gaming videos) will trickle down to the lower tier video resolutions as well. But it takes a long loong time to process on YouTube.
