Sydney Hunter & The Caverns of Death (NES) – Development Update 20th July 2022

A quick (and long overdue) update for development of my port of Sydney Hunter and the Caverns of Death for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).
Development has stalled for a while due to personal health reasons, and also being stuck for a while. The NES has a limit of 256 patterns for sprites and 256 patterns for tiles. The animations in the SNES version of Sydney Hunter are fantastic, but there just wasn’t space for all of them in the NES version. While actually suffering from COVID I had an epiphany and wrote some code to identify any duplicates in the sprite pattern table. I actually found 30 duplicates, which left enough room for two frames of animation for climbing ropes and one for sliding down ropes.
So finally after a long time the game is code complete, testing can properly start, there will be bugs for sure, but it’s great to finally be at this stage.
