The RPCS3 emulator obviously also plays disc based games. You do need to convert the discs with a compatible bluray player to a simple file and folder structure that the emulator can read from.

Sega Rally Revo on disc is quite substantially different from the digital download game. It features more tracks that are quite different to the ones in the digital download. So much different in fact that – when you like this game – owning both the digital download and the disc release makes sense if you want to be able to play all the different tracks.

Physical media that just works in a system and a system that just works without the need of outside intervention or verification or activation is a way to be able to continue to play our videogames well into the future – provided we keep the hardware up and running. This sadly isn’t always the case with digital downloaded games which have a tendency to just vanish into the aether whenever the DRM license checking servers are turned off by the game companies. The only way to preserve these games – is through third party means like emulation – which can be a way to preserve gameplay for posterity if game companies themselves see no need to do so and deem their releases as disposable pulp experiences/culture.

These videos are justs tests of me trying out how well emulators are working in bringing us the same or better gaming experiences that we had on the original hardware. In this video I figured I’d play until i reached a game-over situation. Well I ended up playing well over 1 hour showing off quite a fair few of the different tracks of the disc based version.

This game was also published on the Xbox360 on disc and plays very similarly. A great solid Sega racing gaming that – if you like Sega games – should be in your gaming library. Suffice to say I bought the digital download game shown in the previous video as well as both the Xbox360 and PS3 discs. Playing it on PC through an emulator is amazing considering how different the architectures of a PC and a PS3 are.

This game like the arcade game runs at 30fps – there is a PC release that is capable of higher resolutions and framerate but it does suffer from more noticeable pop-in.
