I have a fair few retro gaming handhelds, a fair few of them are Android gaming hand helds. Most of them are long in the tooth running Android 4.4.x (32bit Android) which a lot of software doesn’t run on anymore.
Gaming on Android with emulators usually requires you to run a specific emulator and locate and load your game through some sort of file browser. Some have quite decent user interfaces and some even a very elaborate gamelauncher with screenshots, game art, game information and all that.
Lemuroid is such an emulator, providing a very intuitive and easy to use interface that has you playing your different games in no time, offering save states, resume. Multiplayer gaming and fancy filters – using LCD filters for the handhelds really works well and looks nice, the contrast between the pixels on the original handhelds is emulated giving the graphics a boost and the ‘subpixel’ info that some of these bitmap graphics rely on (the contrast between two adjacent pixels basically creates a 3rd pixel that isn’t there but is perceived by our eyes). Lemuroid doesn’t run on my Android 4.4 devices, but on slightly newer devices with Android 7.x and above, Lemuroid provides a very easy to use user interface that I show in this video with some gameplay of various shmups, a Bovine Metal Slug clone situated in the old Wild West, and quite a fair few others.

[][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] 80% in recording broke, so that’s all there is. And the sound balance is off, no way to repair that in post so I reckon viewers just have to deal with that or don’t.
Lemuroid Minimum Requirements
• Android 7 ✔
• 1GB Ram ✔
If your Android tablet, phone handheld sports a older Android variant, don’t worry, as RetroArch itself – where Lemuroid is based upon actually has improved it’s GUI capabilities and can pretty much net you a similar result with easy to navigate play lists and game art. RetroArch does run on Android 4.4.x and higher and even on older 4.4 devices can fly, especially with 4 cores higher clocked CPU and a somewhat decent GPU supporting OPENGL. Vulcan seems to be out of the question on Android 4.4.
RetroArch Minimum Requirements (PlayStore/AmazonStore)
• Android 8 ✔
• 1GB Ram ✔
• No downloadable cores/50 curated cores off the official store servers (twice weekly updated)
RetroArch Minimum Requirements (RetroArch website/non PlayStore sideload)
• Android x.x ✔ 🥔🏎🚀 (backwards compatible with many version of Android)
• 1GB Ram ✔
• Downloadable cores (more configurable)
Mind you, RetroArch is what the Raspberry Pi – console variants and quite a few other Linux based game distro’s run with.
