The Tragic Story of Yusuf Ismail, Wrestling’s First Great Foreign Heel | Kim Justice

In 1898, a man billed as the “Terrible Turk”, Yusuf Ismail, landed in New York. Over the course of five months he made quite a name for himself, pulling big crowds in matches against the day’s top wrestlers that weren’t that far removed from modern day wrestling. But for all his fame and supposed success, this story is one of exploitation, ending in a disaster that would allow his managers to forever tarnish his name.
