Sonic & Knuckles was released in 1994 and it was an oddity at the time due to the unique “Lock On” technology which enabled you to play Sonic 3 with Knuckles. It also allowed you to (amazingly) play Sonic 2 with Knuckles as well. However Sonic 1 had some incompatibility issues preventing it to be given the Knuckles treatment.
