I really enjoyed watching Sumer Games Done Quick over the past week. I’ve watched it every year since it started and always make sure to tune in. For those of you that don’ know, GDQ is an event which takes place twice a year, with AGDQ at the start of the year and SGDQ in the summer.
Watching people speedrun some of my favourite games is fascinating to me. It’s amazing to see just how much time and effort people put into perfecting their favourite games. Some of the glitches people can do are just mindblowing. I really enjoyed seeing some of the screen wraps in Sonic 3, which I then went and tried myself. and failed, of course…
I did used to take speedrunning seriously for a couple of games. The one I pracised the most was Super Mario Land on the gameboy, even before GDQ was a thing I’d time myself and slowly get better and better at the game.
I did at one point actually match the world record at the time, which was around 13 minutes. I even considered redocrding it using my camera and the Super Gameboy on the SNES to send in to Guiness World Records in around 2008 or 9 but I never went though with it… I tried playing it again as a speedrun recently but I think I’m a bit out of practise, clocking in at around 19 minutes!
