(Update: as this was the first time I ever fitted a cooler like the Kraken, I seem to have made some mistakes that I rectified and I am now using it with the CPU running cooler than the Stock Air Cooler – I did an updat video on it later)
The Stock Air Cooler on the Ryzen 7 2700x – the Wraith Prism – seems to work better on the system than the liquid NZXT Kraken X72 liquid cooler.
When I swapped out the Wraith Prism for the NZXT Kraken X72 liquid cooler I was hoping temperatures and performance would be more stable.
Wraith Prism: temperatures varying between 54C and 85C (!) with the fan ramping up but CPU speeds often higher than 3.9 and well into the 4.2Ghz range boosting without overclock. Varying speeds of fan and CPU cores but speedy and high scores on the
Cinebench : low to mid 1700s
NZXT Kraken X72: temperatures invariably staying below 72C. So no peeks, but CPU speeds remain low; mostly stock speeds of 3.7Ghz sometimes going up to 3.9Ghz but mostly sticking to 3.7-3.8Ghz. Cinebench scores 1100 to low 1400s which is quite a bit of a lower performance.
Conclusion: Closed loop watercooling in my Sharkoon case with the NZXT Kraken X72 on the Ryzen 7 2700x resulted in more stable temps and CPU but an overall slowness in performance sticking to the stock 3.7Ghz.
Air cooling on the Wraith Prism in my Sharkoon case with the Ryzen 7 2700x resulted in higher temps, higher overall speeds but more fluctuating. It seems that in my system air cooling allows for adopting to the volatile nature of the Ryzen 2700x boostclocking better than watercooling.
I will try the NZXT in my intel box – which has a much more stable CPU clock & temp range probably more suited to water cooling.
