My Original Xbox Died – Replaced it’s RetroGaming With A PC Running RetroPie on Linux (Ubuntu) ✅

RetroGaming On Linux (2) – Running RetroPie on Linux (Ubuntu) on a Core i3

Lakka is a lean and mean Linux Distribution providing a PS3 like GUI (see separate video here

Retropie on Ubuntu is more versatile but less monkey proof (this video).

Computers Core2Duo, i3, i5 or similarly specced AMD CPUs will be capable of near perfect emulation. But access to it through the GUI is less intuitive and one does need a mouse and keyboard to operate as this video will demonstrate.

The raspberry Pi comes very close to the original Xbox in terms of easy to use and accessible emulation with the RetroPie Linux distro running on it. But it lacks power. Running RetroPie on PC might change that!

A wireless Logitech F710 or a Logitech Rumblepad 2 (predecessor) will be easily configured (Lakka doesn’t even need configuring of the controller, but RetroPie does but only from within the Emulation Station menu – the rest of the emulator(s) (Retroarch) will pick up on the Emulation Station settings.

RetroPie on PC and RaspberryPi has more emulators available to it than Lakka which only runs a subset of compiled cores. Add to those the emulators running outside of RetroPie on Linux itself
and the possibilities are much more elaborate on a full Linux installation. But the ease of use (gamepad control of GUI as well as the games) is different.

RetroPie isn’t part of the Ubuntu Distro, you have to manually add to it using a configuration script that will basically compile and install it onto your system. The thing is that when Ubuntu updates itself it could potentially break the RetroPie installation – as it actually ended up doing on my system.

The overhead of the GUI and all the processes running on this little system might take a toll on its responsiveness when running games and/or emulators.

Lakka is better at this and has no real discernible lag, it’s mean and lean, but could Android be as versatile a replacement as Linux but with just a little or no lag as Lakka has?

Two fairly similar systems running Ubuntu/Lakka and Android 6.0.1 x86 in this set of videos:
Dell Optiplex 980
Intel Core i3 550 / 3.2 GHz, Intel Q57 Express chipset
4-Gb DDR3 RAM, 250Gb SSD HD
Intel GMA 4500 Dynamic Video Memory Technology 5.0, DVI, displayport, VGA
(Lakka & Android 6.0.1 – separate video)

Lenovo ThinkCentre Edge E73 SFF (10AU003FMH)
Intel Core i3-4130 Intel Haswell, Intel H81 chipset
4-12Gb DDR3 RAM, 1Gb SATA HD
Intel HD Graphics 4400, NVidia GT210 PCIe
(this video)

I own all games shown here on there original media, I don’t condone piracy. To me emulation is about preservation and ease of use and saving wear and tear on the original systems. And a fascination about how these systems work and how to make
differences in architecture go away through software.
