Commodore 1541C Floppy Disk Drive Repair & Cleaning

A short video covering the repair of a Commodore 1541 C Floppy Disk Drive.

Head coil resistance readings on a working drive:-

red & yellow: 25.6 Ohm
red & black: 12.4 Ohm
red & blue: 23.8 Ohm
yellow & black: 13.8 Ohm
yellow & blue: 25.2 Ohm
black & blue: 12.0 Ohm

For the Newtronics 1541C model:-

J3 ON = track 0 bump
J3 OFF = track 0 use photo sensor

J1 ON J2 ON = DEVICE 8
J1 OFF J2 ON = DEVICE 9
J1 ON J2 OFF = DEVICE 10
J1 OFF J2 OFF = DEVICE 11

Cleaned the heads really well twice, still not reading at all – zeros coming back no matter what is read. It was reporting 74 errors most of the time. After de-magnetising the heads it started giving 27 (CRC?) errors, so it actually came back to life at that point. Then after more cleaning, and eventually using a plastic cleaner to remove some pretty stuborn particals from the head, it was then perfect. I did also later de-magnetise the heads a few more times – that was when I had a bad disk and didn’t realise I had already got the head working perfectly.
