Mark Plays… Ms.Pac-man on the VIC-20 – a bit of a highscore challenge
Lactobacillus Prime
Ms. Pac-man on the VIC-20 by Atarisoft is quite an achievement. On the little 3Kb machine they managed to coax quite a solid Ms. Pac-man port out of it.
It’s good to know that the VIC-20 is the predecessor to the C64 and it one can safely say that without the VIC-20 the C64 would not have existed.
The VIC-20 comes in a case very similar to the C64 and C16 machines and the CPU is similar to the C64’s, the C64’s 6510 CPU has more features than the 6502 of the VIC-20 though.
The VIC-20 doesn’t have a SID sound chip but it’s actually the VIC-chip that makes the sounds and it produces the video as well. On the C64 the sound is created by a separate synth / sound chip called the SID (Sound Interface Device) and the video is produced by the VIC-II, compared to the VIC chip inside the VIC-20 the C64 is capable of creating sprites and it has a higher resolution.
Still the VIC-20 is quite a powerfull little machine and perhaps it can safely be said that it hasn’t reached its full potential yet.
Go check out Ms.Pac-man on the VIC-20, it looks and sounds very familiar but is quite rudimentary and at the same time not.
Try to beat my score! It’s easily done I think 🙂
