The PlayStation just celebrated it’s 20th anniversary. I got a special version of the original PlayStation that I actually saved up opening up for this anniversary. I unbox it and hook it up and show how it works.

It’s the Sony Net Yaroze, a consumer’s version of the Original Playstation Development Kit that quite a few people at schools around the world learnt to program with. A great step up toward proper commercial development on the Sony Playstation.

It’s region free to boot so it might actually be the ‘ultimate’ original PlayStation to own if you are internationally oriented with your PlayStation games.

A little information about what I found out about the net Yaroze models that I am familiar with:

DTL-H1200 Bios 2.2; Rec C hardware, NTSC-J boots CD-R copies
DTL-H1201 Bios 2.2; Rec C hardware, NTSC-U boots CD-R copies
DTL-H1202 Bios 2.2; Rec C hardware, PAL boots CD-R copies

DTL-H3000 Bios 2.2; Rev C hardware, NTSC-J – doesn’t play CD-R copies
DTL-H3001 Bios 2.2; Rev C hardware, NTSC-U/C – doesn’t play CD-R copies
DTL-H3002 Bios 2.2; Rev C hardware, PAL – doesn’t play CD-R copies

All models (except those with later Japanese boot ROM) can boot software with any region code.

0 is Japan (Japanese boot ROM, NTSC:J region, NTSC Video, 100 V PSU)
1 is USA/Canada (English boot ROM, NTSC:U/C region, NTSC Video, 110 V PSU)
2 is Europe/Australia/PAL region (English boot ROM, PAL region, PAL Video, 220-240 V PSU)
3 is Asia (English boot ROM, NTSC:J region, NTSC video, Wide range 110-240 V PSU)
