Windows 10 Upgrade & Fresh Install Hints and Tips (Night-shift edition)

To answer quite a few of the PMs I got regarding installing Windows 10 here’s a waffle in video format.

I have installed Windows 10 on 3 PCs and 1 Tablet, upgrades and fresh installs. Both the Home and Pro versions and both 32 and 64 bit versions. It turns you into a bit of a Windows 10 installation guru LOL.

If you update your existing Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 you don’t have to type in a licence key as that is generated for you. You do need that key if you were to ever install Windows 10 again or proceed to do a secondary fresh install on the same hardware.

Finding out your key can easily be done with Speccy from Piriform software. So If you want to do a clean install you need to do the update to Windows 10 first, upgrading or selecting clear settings clear install to generate your complimentory new Microsoft Windows 10 key that will work with your machine. With speccy by Piriform, you can read out the license key you’re given. It is always goes to write that down. Also for future installs.

With that key you can do a clean install from scratch. You can’t do a full clean install install from scratch without doing with method of the upgrade first. As Microsoft doesn’t generate you a new Windows 10 key, and you can’t clean install that machine.

If you need to install or reinstall Windows 10, you can use the tools on this page to create your own installation media using either a USB flash drive or a DVD. Works better and faster than having windows update through windows update at a moment in time that may be most inconvenient for you. You can plan and choose at which point in time you update.

Mind you installing Windows 10 or upgrading to it is at your own risk. Any data loss is your own responsibility. Back up your stuff first before updating.
